WHY SHOULD I GO INTO GOAT FARMING?

You may want to know if there are any interesting benefits of being a goat farmer; of course, they are several benefits attached to it, which will be discussed below.

  1. Its unique taste: Goat meat is very appetizing and has a unique taste, which most people love it. Some people love to have goat meat in almost every meal they cook especially the male goat (Billy) which gives its strong and nice flavor in meals. Goat meat is lower in fat than chicken and contains higher protein than beef.
  2. Housing: Goats can share their houses with some other animals and does not necessarily require special housing. You do not have to worry about spending money to set up special housing for your goats.
  3. Adaptability to climatic conditions: Goats compared to other animals can easily adapt to any climatic condition, so you do not have to worry about them when there is any form of climatic change.
  4. Disease resistance: Another advantage that goat has over other farm animals is their ability to be resistant to certain diseases.
  5. Their milk: Another benefit of goat farming is their milk. As I said earlier on, goats are also reared for their milk. Goat milk is easily digestible and could be preferred over cow milk. Its milk is particularly good for children and has reduced allergic complications.
  6. Health benefits: Goat milk helps people suffering from diseases like liver dysfunction, cough, diabetes, peptic ulcers, asthma, and other digestive problems,
  7. Nutritional benefits: Goat meat is low in fat and calories. It also has higher phosphate content and vitamins.
  8. Its hide and skin: Goatskin produces hide and skin, which is used to manufacture leather products like shoes, hats, bags, etc. Its hairs could also be used to make ropes.
  9. Manure: Goat has high-quality manure, which is richer in phosphorous acid and nitrogen than cow manure. Its dung can be used on farms as manure.

WHAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE GOING INTO GOAT FARMING

Your capital: Capital is the amount of money you have at hand to start up a business. Whether you are starting with a few goats or a large number, ensure you have enough money to start with. You can start with as small as two goats and rear up to 500 goats within two years.

Housing: You can keep your goats in a pen. Your pen should have these qualities;

  • It should shade your goats from harsh weather conditions like rain or sun.
  • It must be well ventilated.
  • Properly fence the housing to prevent thieves, pests and unnecessary intrusion.
  • The pen must be cleaned regularly and free from dampness.
  • Use fresh hay or straw for bedding.
  • Feeding and drinking troughs should be kept in the pen for your goats.

Land: The land you choose for your goats to graze on should be suitable enough them for them. Also, be careful not to allow your goats to feed on young weed or just any weed because this could cause some type of disease for them. When taking your goats out to graze, make sure the weed is healthy and not infected.

Type of breed: When selecting breeds, select high quality breeds. Of course, you know it matters, because for if you want to be a successful goat farmer, you have to work with the right breeds.

Types of breeds include; Nigerian dwarf, Pygmy, Boer, Alpine etc. If you want to have a large population of goats without having to buy many goats to start up the business, you could simply buy two male goats (bucks) and a few female goats (does). The bucks will mate with the does and this will increase the number of your goats.

Feeding/ feed: Goats are herbivorous; they feed on most leaves like maize leaf, peels of yam, pawpaw, and banana. Goats can also feed on cooked food; my neighbor usually cooks rice or yam and gives her goats to eat.

You can also buy formulated feeds from the market if you are financially capable. Having an area for grazing will reduce the cost of feeding your goats.

MARKETING

When your goats have hit the marketable size you aimed for, they will be due for marketing and this stage will determine if you are making profit or loss in your business.

If you are inexperienced, then you will have to find out from other goat farmers how and where they market their goats and the price at which they market their goats. Price is an important factor you must consider so that you will not sell your goats below or above the market price.

You can sell your goats in the market or supply them to eateries or restaurants. You can as well supply them in hotels. They can be sold alive or killed and packaged.

Any way you choose, make sure that you are making cool cash from marketing your goats.
